I was either reading about or watched a Youtube vid a few days ago that explained that some ISPs throttle their bandwidth allowing much slower speed when using “non-authorised” devices, like modems not supplied by them. Apparently there is a way to make Mikrotik appear that they are authorised, but for the life of me I can’t seem to find it again.
So I’m hoping someone here will be able to help me as I believe this might apply to one of our ISPs.
The info about LTE device that ISP can get is IMEI number (which also encodes manufacturer and device model). AFAIK it’s not possible to “fake” IMEI from inside ROS.
That was my impression too, just needed some confirmation. Many thanks!
EDIT: Interestingly, it appears to apply to the LTE device. When I tried to apply it to the hEX, I got the error below. Ether1 is the WAN interface, but even changing it to bridge made no difference. However, it did apply to the LTE device in passthrough mode. So it’ll be interesting to see whether it works going forward.
EDIT2: Not sure yet whether it does what it says on the box, but I’ve noticed that I now have a CA band active on one of our providers that wasn’t there before, B3&7. So, I’ll claim it as an improvement, 100Mbs is better than 65Mbs in anyone’s book. Happy days.
The config I ran for the hEX was a direct cut and paste from the article, which Winbox rejected it as explained above. I then manually inputted the config using the UI (not term) and having just checked, it is chain=post-routing. Image below shows CA working where it wasn’t with this provider before the config was run.
