I see this more often than i thinki should, the abilty of a radio to connect, via station or WDS, with a great signal, but MAC pings nor anything else go though.
Most of my RBs are set to reboot if they cant ping the GW after 15 min or so, so i know they are rebooting, and i’ll see them connect, but i cant do anything nor mac ping, so it requires a drive out to the location.
My question is, what would ever cause two MT’s connected to each other, with good RSSI to not pass mac pings?
current example:
a SR2 i set to WDS and the other to WDS, after everything was working fine in ap bridge to station mode, the unit connects, i can even see it rebooting after 15 min, but cant do anything..no mac pings nothing.
(also just had a sistuation EXACTLY like above but with a sr9)
my understanding is that layer 2 mac pings should work regardlessly of just about any settings on the router.
real annoying as you cant do almost any configuration of wirless links remotely.
I’ve noticed that mac-ping and mac-telnet don’t work to just any MAC address…they work on the MAC address only of a “valid” interface. So, for example, if you had a wireless card in WDS mode associated to something else, but that wireless interface was in a bridge, mac-ping and mac-telnet (in my experience) only responds for any of the interfaces that are in that bridge if you mac-ping or mac-telnet to the bridge’s MAC address (whatever MAC the bridge assumed, which, in 2.9, is usually the lowest-numbered MAC out of all of the interfaces in the bridge).
This makes sense since any traffic coming from the MikroTik through any of the interfaces within that bridge will have a source MAC address of the bridge, not of the actual physical interface itself. Thus, the interface’s MAC is no longer “valid” while it is in a bridge with other interfaces.
So make sure you know what the MAC address is of the bridge that the wireless interface is in, if it’s in a bridge, and mac-ping that MAC instead of the MAC that shows up in the wireless association table of the AP!
I have the same problem (another topic) where link suddently looses L2 connectivity even if the link is up!.. Only difference in my case is that the L2 connectivity comes back. What HW configuration do you have? Is it overclocked?
