Manual TX power, XR5, RIC/522T

Hello

I have some TX power questions.

I have a lot of the old RICs with the RB532 board.
When I have close links, I set TX Power to manual, and experiment with the 3 highest speeds down in 1db steps.
So I get SNR down to about 50db and signal strength around 45dbm.

But now I have set up a p2p link with RIC/522T, and signal strength was way high (short jump).
I set the TX Power to manual and changed the settings, but noting seems to happen…
Then I tried all rates fixed, and that worked.

I have always used the standard wifi cards in these ones (65mw)

But now I have a rather long jump (35km) so I aquired the XR5 cards.
So now I really need answer to these questions…

-What SNR and signal strength do you consider optimal (the one to aim for when adjusting power)?
-Should one use manual TX Power, all rates fixed or any other settings?
-Why didnt I see any change setting manual TX Power on the RIC/522T? -I see some (doing a search on the forum) adjust the XR5 to i.e. 28db TX Power in winbox, but some say there is a 10db offset, so when setting it to 18 its really 28 witch is max for the card. What would be the correct settings here?

Best regards

You should always use default power settings unless your signal is too high. You are looking for something in the range of -64 to -72.

Yes, but in these cases signal was to high, what then?
And with the xr5?

Use default unless the signal is too high. If the signal is too high lower the power settings.

Version 3.x compensates for the offset in the XR5 automatically. Version 2.9 does now.
