Maximum users on the AP

Hi all,

What’s the maximum users that can I have in my AP???

PS: My clients can have access with 200Kbps and 400Kbps.

well 50-100 maybe?

What if I have three sectors fed by three PRISM 802.11b radios? All PPPoE? I give lots of BW (3meg).

1 run 50 512 users of a single b sector fine

I can say for associated clients there’s no limit, but over 50 performance becomes very bad…

Does it really depend on number of clients or their total bandwidth? I mean, if performances drop by number of clients, then probably faster CPU’s can help and it is probably not the same if you have 50 clients using 64K speed or 50 clients using 256K speed. What are your experiences?

It depends of the speed of the client, distance of the client, if its downloading or just browsing, etc…

I am talking about 802.11b.
CPU can’t help here, it’s a card actually the one that can’t process a lot of connections, packets/second.
As cibernet wrote it depends what kind of traffic you have.
So basically number of associated clients is not a problem as far as amount of traffic is not killin’ performance.
I have APs with 40 clients connected at the same time, they use regular http, icq, mirc etc. and APs are working great (2mbit/s average comsumption).
On other hand, I have APs with 20 clients, but these guys are Internet killers (p2p, all sorts of junk traffic) and AP consumption is ~0.5mbit/s.
Remember, just one client with junk traffic can kill your AP.
So, filter viruses, use mangle, queue tree, limit concurrent connections per IP, turn off default forwarding, fight for your AP :smiley:

Well, I’m doing this for their own good! They can’t get wild on AP!
They can use internet as God said! There most be some quality of service and priorities. It could be called Order of da House :smiley:

i have a RB532 w/R52 wlan doing hotspot, firewall rules, p2p limit, etc etc and when connect about 80 clients all work fine, but at 2hrs the router lose effectivity and the clients are disconnected, but nothing debug rare in the MT Syslog and the CPU Load is very light…
what can be? what`s happen when the RB is overloaded by clients? this crash or is my situation?

It is really a useful discussion.

The problem with these small boards is that memory is 32 MB or 64 MB and processor speed is 266 MHz and it is not upgradable.

We are currentlly running two sectors on PC P4 3.2 GHz 512 MB with no problems. The memory average=maximum usage is 30 MB, The CPU average is low but maximum is 12% (0.12*3.2=0.384 GHz),

So I assume the board with 266 MHz MIPS CPU, 32 or 64 MB DDR RAM will be on the edge to handle such traffic.

Average number of concerrent users we have is 30 in the night and each has 64 kbps down and 32 kbps up.

This comes from the wiki, I guess this is the soft/hardware limit:
max-station-count (integer [1..2007]; Default: 2007) Maximum number of associated clients. WDS links also count toward this limit.

From experience I set BW limit to 4Mbps/client and can have 600 clients connected on a 50Mbps internet connection with no complaints.
But this is in a distributed environment. Never had more then 20 clients connected to one AP.
