Oh. I would expect you described your expectations at least.
Often RouterBoard will be cheaper (after adding price of decent LAN ifaces), more powerful in routing and less power hungry than x86 platform ![]()

you have a very complicated requirements
i think the only reason to use x86 is for using a high end cpu to process full bgp feeds
x86 has no low power consumption (30-80watt on idle is normal) unless you use laptop components.
an x86 system cost at least 400us including L4 license but powered with 110-250AC and at least 30 watt idle power consumption
with that budget you are close to buy a ccr1009 and avoid a lot of headaches with 15w idle power that can be powered by 24vDC

Works like a charm for one year.
But it will need replacement for something more powerfull. That chinesse board looks intereting. What is the power consumption with some lower earting CPU?
@rado3105: It also depends on what you’re trying to archive. I will never use crappy built-in network interfaces. Something like Intel I350-T4 is a reasonable minimum for high availability, but that entry-level card costs like $150 alone.
I had DIY server-router on Linux for circa 3 years - it was horrible experience
I also used x86 as edge-router for some time - it was a pain. After switching to CCR you could almost forget you have a router.
I have no problem with my x86 system, just planning to upgrade it…

I just packed up Celeron dual cpu, socket 1150, x86 system, integrated lan + 3 pci-e lan + 3 pci lan
which takes 500+ mbps input traffic, with firewall, queues, and cpu 10-20%,
so what is the pain ?
except those pci lan cards, which a bit hogs up the cpu, everything else works cool n’ quiet.

Don’t mean to be rude but why would you need something like a core i3 for routeros? When i had my dell optiplex mini tower single core 1.66ghz with a 4 port intel lan card and used the on broad lan for the WAN gateway, From when i can remember maxing out my 152mb dl it was hitting 41% cpu with the default rules setup and i also added a nat rule to open my xbox 360.
First of all network interfaces drivers are stable in the lab - if you go on production a lot of things can go wild
500Mb/s is not that much, if you’re dealing with 2-3Gb/s a lot of strange things stars happening (random crashed, lost packets etc.).
CloudFlare as I remember described some of them long time ago on it’s blog. Standard Linux kernel networking works good for server scenario - if you try to use it as a router you better go for dedicated solution like RouterOS.
…and I didn’t mention kernel upgrade stability - even stable releases can break things very very easy - once a time I upgraded kernel from one stable release to another and suddenly load increased 1.5x (but it was hard to debug since it was present only above 800k pps).
I’m running RouterOS in a VM for gigabit routing at home. Running on 1 vcpu under ESXI on a i5-2520m, 80% max cpu load at 1 gbps.
1037U or J1900 + 1GB RAM + 4GB Flash + 8 or 4 GBE + RouterOS L4 only cost less than 200us.
What is the performance compared with RB850Gx2, RB1100AHx2, CCR1009 and the new RB3011?
i think OP imply something more quiet and less power-hungry, like sceond generation of Brasswell D chips or new AM1 chips from AMD or newer board with soldered CPU too.
as for external DC power source - its remain uncommon, sadly, even for low-power platform to my surprice, despite being Very practical and reliable to use. so far - only two brands made motherboards with among popular. personally i prefer Zotac-branded, usually, but thats depends local market.
but generally using ROS on x86 someone missed whole Point of Routerboard, whether that was cute routers like HAP or super-duper fast CCR routers.
power of x86 is aisde cheap and replairable hardware is opennes and ability to Choose something to install and use and mainline distros remain quite common(just walked across router with gentoo within, for example, occasionally) or specialized ones, like VyOS or alikes(nearly ~10 most popular or so).
