MC7304 direct-ip mode any chance?

Hi there,

According to https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Supported_Hardware#4G_LTE_cards_and_modems the MC7304 works for LTE and PPP in v7.xx of ROS, but unfortunately as there isn’t even a beta version of that ROS available is there any possibility that I would be able to get it going in v6.39.1? Any advice on the setup would be much appreciated. From what I can see there are some AT commands that I have to send down to form the connection directly on the MC7304 and then in addition to that I assume that I will have to enable direct-ip-mode on the RB and hope/pray for the best?

I'm struggling with an issue on the Sierra Wireless MC7304 where I've only been able to find a single communication channel between a Mikrotik routerboard and the modem - channel 2. I've tried all other combinations, but channel 2 is the only one that responds. I can only use this channel for either data or info. Not both at the same time.

I would like to have access to the info channel in order to read information like the signal strength on a regular basis. At the moment I have a script that periodically breaks the connection, reads the signal strength and then re-builds the connection. But this process results in down-time of a minute for all clients, which is a pain.

Does anybody have a suggestion for how to overcome this problem?

There isn't really a way around this, the MC7304 only offers a sngle USB end point with AT command access which the Microtik then give the user access to for PPP dial up AT commands, etc. In normal applications which design an MC7304 in you are able to use other network interfaces that the unit enumerates to the system with which allows you to maintain AT command access to the unit (or use the QMI interface) but Microtik does not allow this.

You can’t get any newer Sierra Wireless modems (apart from MC77xx) to work without a PPP interface. I email MikroTik support every time a new SW modem comes out and the response is always the same: “yes, it works 100% in v7”. This really means “no, it only works with PPP and we’ve got no ETA on when it will work proper”.

Yeah, that looks to be the case for me as well. I’ve tried multiple methods as suggested by various engineers of the various organizations involved with no-go. So it looks like either wait for ROS7 which isn’t feasible while there is no ETA, or look for alternatives to Sierra and I’m waiting for samples to arrive as we speak.

I think the Huawei ME909 series works with full LTE and you can access the stats.
