We are trying to see if it’s possible to use a groove as a client to and existing wireless backbone and also be an access point for other wireless devices.

It is not smart, but with sector or omnidirectional antenna you can do that. Just create a virtual ap interface and bridge it together with the client wlan interface. Better to use two appropriate devices instead.
