MetaRouter on RB1000

Will we see MetaRouter/XEN support on the RB1000 soon?

We are replacing some of our NetScreen NS-5GT and SSG-5 firewalls with RB1000s and are looking at getting similar functionally as NetScreens vrouter or Cisco VRF features to have completely seperate routing tables for different zones.

I think the MetaRouter concept could be a good solution, so I was very disappointed when I found out I’ve just bought one of the boxes that does NOT support this feature! Or have I missed something?

You are right, right now Xen only works on X86, and Metarouter works only on RB4xx, but we are working on a PPC (RB1000) port too, just wait a while.

Normunds,

I would really appreciate it if MikroTik would consider having one (!) router virtualization feature consistent across all hardware platforms in the version 4.x - i.e. MetaROUTER.

Of course Xen can do different things (like running a custom linux distro on it), but keeping it down to virtualizing router functionality would be very fine…

Having Xen in addition to that (on x86 systems) would make it perfect.

I vote for Xen on all platforms (or at least PPC platforms since they normally have lots of CPU power to spare)…

Imagine:

  • SIP support… just dump an Asterisk box as a VM on the same router!
  • File/Print server… stick a USB HDD into one of the upcoming routers and VM a Samba server
  • WWW Server… distro with Apache
    … all on one router!

MetaRouter basically is the same as XEN, just a lot more work put inside, so it can be ran on limited hardware as it is on routerboards.

Configuration options are basically the same.

edit:

ok, there some news - metarouter is not xen it is not even a rewrite or in any way connected with it. :sunglasses:

This is great! I can’t wait! :sunglasses:

any update on the ETA for this on the 1000’s?

what about MetaRouter support on x86? I would LOVE to have that for some edge router / BGP functions so I could give each BGP peer it’s own MetaRouter instance… it would simplify alot of configs!

yeah, tha’ts the plan.

Very nice, I look forward to this functionality.

when’s the plan supposed to take effect??
