Mikrotik as PPPoE Server; ping issues cpu related?

Hello everyone,
I’ve not worked with MT for quite a while, but now a friend of mine got back to me with a problem/issue (I helped him configuring the MT the first time).
He’s working for a small, regional ISP and they use a RB1100 as a PPPoE Server.
Currently there are about 240 logins on the server, all of them with a profile specific speed limit. Those limits create dynamic simple queue entries (which are about 240 as well).
The CPU usage is bumping from 40-70% within few seconds sometimes. His guess was, that the CPU usage might be causing ping problems (sometimes 10-15, sometimes 40-50; keeps changing quite a bit) and those ping problems are problematic for VOIP.

I’d be happy if someone can share his/her oppinion about the amount of PPPoE users and the CPU usage,
thanks in advance,

you have a other problem, you need QoS for the packet from voip above other traffic.

That is going to be the next step, it explains the bad quality of some calls.
But what about the CPU usage bumping up and down so much?

is normal for that many users, update to rb1100AHx2

for pppoe like this. try some x86 with a bit more CPU and ram.

Really, what you need is proper QoS for the VoIP.

As long as the RB’s CPU is not maxxed, that is not going to be an issue. Of course, if you want to be sure that it’s not going to become an issue, upgrade to the 1100AHx2.
