Mikrotik cAP AX subnetting with RB4011

Hi,

Having recently received my cAP AX, I started to configure it to serve as an access point with a separate subnet.

Setup should be like follows:

rb-Bridge:  	<->	rb4011 Ether10		<->   cAP AX Bridge
ether1-9 Ether1-2
									wifi1-2

Goal is to have subnets:

All devices on the rb4011 bridge
192.168.1.0/24

All devices on the AP (DHCP server serving at ether10 on routerboard)
192.168.2.0/24

DHCP Servers are in the RB. rb-bridge has DHCP server serving address pools for 192.168.1.2-254 network and Ether10 has DHCP server for serving pools 192.168.2.2-254

Default configuration in the cAP AX has

Bridge
- ether2
- wifi1-2
- DHCP server 192.168.88.1/24

Ether1
- DHCP client

Initially the device works fine with the factory configs, but as I try to either move the ether1 interface to the bridge, disable DHCP client and use static IP address, remove DHCP server, I get disconnected and cannot connect back unless I do a factory reset. So I figure I have something wrong in my steps to achieve the desired subnets or missing some part of the configurations needed

What could be good pointers to correct procedures to:

  • Implementing so that all interfaces on cAP AX are part of the bridge on the AP and successfully become part of the subnet 192.168.2.0/24
  • Use the RB4011’s DHCP server on interface ether10 for all devices using the AP. (I attempted to implement a DHCP relay as well by reading through the documentation, but DHCP requests were not relayed properly so probably I did a misconfiguration there)
# factory config
# only changed so that ether1 is on LAN interface list to allow mgmt host to connect from desktop

The good procedure would be to use the RB4011 as the router and the capax as a capax!

Thank you, sir! From that link, I also found the link to the “new user pathway to config success” docs, which turns out to be a whole bounty of golden content. I believe these will be sufficient for some time to set up and tinker with the network more.

I highly recommend working on any bridge construct ( and vlans ) from a port OFF THE BRIDGE!
