mikrotik for 70,000 users

Hello everyone, we are looking firward to deploy mikrotik as a proxy server, firewall, bandwidth manager.

The project is at a big university and there is almost 50,000 students and alot of people on the staff, they are replacing their Isa servers with other product and I suggested mikrotik. So my question is about how far mikrotik can go with x86 systems specially multicore ones to achive such a high performance. Also the bandwidth is not that much which is a fiber 150+ Mbps.

We didn’t decide the type of hardware yet but they can go so far on that for sure so no worries about that.

Greetings . .

probably, proxy is not so good idea (well, maybe use it in RAM only…), but for 150 Mbps any modern x86 should be quite enough

what authentication do you plan to use?

The proxy portion will be as a transparent proxy, and they did request it to decrease the traffic amount, so you are saying the proxy srver itself is not a good idea or you mean routerOS as proxy server is not good?

About the implementation it is not the wireless part , there is already deployed access point covering the area quiet well, but they did suffer with Isa server and want a replacement.

About the authentication Hotspot feature also a requested feature and we may integrate it with the active directory for all the users as well.

webproxy in ROS is still for SOHO usage, I believe. for professionals I’d rather recommend dedicated squid machine (in tproxy mode!)

suffer from what?
