I just bought this router, set everything up and it’s working well, but I have one issue where connecting to the 5 GHz network takes considerably longer than to the 2.4 GHz network (on my phone, 1 second for the 2.4 GHz vs 5-6 on the 5 GHz). This is my first 5 GHz router so I’m not sure if that’s just how 5 GHz works or if there’s something I can change in my setup?
Another question is about the naming of the wireless networks, are there any downsides to naming both the network the same?
Post your current configuration here. Also put different names for 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz spectrum, because devices may put in hole until device decide what signal is stronger and move to that network.
Does it happen always, or only happened once? Sometimes the device will look for nearby radars, as per EU rules. But once that is done, the delay should be gone.
Your config looks fine.
Using the same SSID is more convenient, if you don’t want to explain your guests which AP to use and don’t care much if your phone switches to 2GHz when you are further away from the AP.
If you mostly control your own devices, it might be better to force some old devices to 2GHz and force the newer devices to 5GHz, you can do this by having separate SSIDs.
It always happens, even after the “detecting radar” phase. On my phone, it spends most of the time trying to get an IP address, at least it says so in the WiFi settings there. I should mention the DHCP server is not on the MikroTik router but on another router on my network (hence the disabled DHCP server on the MikroTik), but there shouldn’t be anything wrong with it since 2.4 GHz connects fast.
You can add new log topic in “system → logging” with parameters “wireless + debug” and see if the log file says anything interesting, during this long connection phase
I have a laptop with Windows on it and it seems faster but I’m not sure if it doesn’t just cache the ip because if I do “ipconfig /release” then it will be connecting just as long as my Android phone. Those are the only 5 GHz capable devices I own.
Checked the logs, I can only see there’s a 6 second delay between the WiFi connection and the DHCP discovery from my phone, nothing in between. I just checked again on my laptop and there is no delay, so it seems there must be something on my phone causing this. I guess I’ll just statically assign an IP on my phone for the moment, maybe they’ll fix it in the future. Thanks for the help anyway, at least I know it’s Android’s fault.
