Hello all,
I’m looking for an LTE (mikrotik obviously) modem to connect to my fortinet firewall to create a bridging interface for have the public IP on fortinet interfaces (I don’t want make a NAT connection).
Which mikrotik modem do you racomend?
First of all, look into models that supports LTE pass trough. Then you need to provide several information like do you want 4G or 5G ? Are you in the city or maybe at the countryside ? What is your budget ?
It’s irrilevant for me. If I’ll find a model with 5g is better but is not mandatory.
I’ll need to cover more than one branch office, someone in the city and someone other in the countryside.
I’ll prefer one device for internal use, I don’t want install any external antenna.
You need to be a little careful there when buying - which’s a good rule in general, but extra much so with MT gear.
There’s a large series of “wAP LTE kit” (product code “wAPR-2nD&”) and “wAP ac LTE kit” (product code “wAPGR-5HacD2HnD&”).
The former have 2.4.GHz radio only, 100 Mbps ethernet, and a weak old 1-core MIPS CPU.
If you are looking for “just an LTE modem” in passthrough mode and don’t feel the 100 Mbps will be a chokepoint, should be still fine.
The latter are quad-core ARM, gigabit Ethernet, and dual-band wifi. They can handle quite a lot more work, as needed.
And then there are the various LTE modems, many of which were put both in the old and the new(er) mainboard.
(now we have new-est wAP ax, but that one doesn’t have LTE variant released yet).
&EC200A-EU is the modem in most recent “refresh” of both variants, which is low-cost but also medium-power (Category 4) regarding speeds and bands supported.
It is a relatively direct upgrade to old &R11e-LTE (also cat4, different bands).
You can find units from years inbetween having &R11e-LTE6 modem (Category 6 as you may guess) which would have more punch if your operator supports the bands.
I use them a lot but only for connecting single device to the internet such as fire alarm panel for eg or when I have single camera on a pole. So for low bandwidth application they are fine but in your case I really think that you should look towards something more powerful.
Hi wrkq,
thank you so much for explanation, I appreciate.
My priority is to find a LTE model with channel aggregations. Other things are in second place
