Mikrotik POE - 12v/24v 500ma - What uses it?

Hi Guys,

So I’ve been wondering, what devices use 24v 500ma?

Since this is what Mikrotik is putting on many new products…

I’ve been looking at our supplier pricelist, and from things like IP Camera’s to IP Phones, everything draw more current than 500ma at 24v.

If my math is correct, that gives a maximum current draw of 12 watts.

Besides some Ubiquiti’s Airvision products work, and some Mikrotik products, like the Groove, what else can use it?

I’ll appreciate some examples of where the POE function is practically used.

I am sorry to tell you that most of the port named “POE” on the router is only used for injecting power for router consumption itself (as a replacement for power adapter), the port cannot provide power for driving POE device.

I know that, but like I said, some the newer Routerboards have POE out…

POE OUT is what the thread is about. Mikrotik has always supported POE IN on almost all it’s devices.

Name just one mikrotik poe out product that have 24v/500mA power supply.

Just one  24v and 500ma per port

Really?!

Almost all of the bigger Routerboards use 24v!

All the below products come with 24v PSU’s, even if they don’t output POE:

RB2011-series, RB411-series, RB411AH, RB433-series, RB450-series, RB493, RB600, and many others.

And as the official POE output decription goes: “…power other PoE capable devices with the same voltage as applied to the unit”, which applies to Routerboards which DO output POE.

So, my question is, again, what POE 24v products are there on the market, that works with less than 500ma. Since I would like to look into those low energy-consuming products.

The list below is bound to be incomplete. However according to Routerboard.com the following devices accept 24V in on their PoE Port and use a max of less than 12W (When a board has slots I am just counting base power usage not including cards)

RB750GL
RB435G
RB-SXT Series
RB-SEXTANT series
RB-2011 Series
RB-Omnitik
RB Metal 5SHPn
RB Groove

Other products

UBNT Air Max Range (pretty sure the whole lot of air max - I havent found one over 12W but I don’t use them myself) (Also UniFi Devices the same)
It appears some Canopy devices use 24V and around 400mA (however seem to need reversed power pins)

And this list above was limited by the currently broken Routerboard.com site (google cache is my friend) also memory as I do power budgets here at $DAYJOB

The following I know cannot be powered from 12W

RB1100AH and x2
CCR Series

The PoE Out feature I find very useful.

I keep a 750UP on my desk for development / pre deployment work.

Alexander

Thanks Neilson/Alexander!

Good to know what works and what doesn’t… I’ll add to this thread as I find more “things” to power by 24v 12w…

update PoE Out controller firmware on RB750UP and you get max of 1A per port, 2.2A total

So name just one mikrotik RB with poe out and 24v/500mA power supply.

RouterBOARD units usually don’t come with 0.5A power supplies, either it’s 0.8A or more. But this shows nothing about the requirements of the device. The real question is - which RouterBOARD models could you power with this feature.

We power dozens of SXTs and 912’s with the 750UP. Never had an issue with it.
