Is the proxy that is built into mikrotik software a ful on web proxy???
is it the same thing as squid???
if you have liek a RB750 can you only have liek 64mb cache???
Is it possible for a mikrotik to cache windows updates???
cause i am currently using ipcop and it has a lovely add on that saves every windows update that is downloaded. so every computer on the network does not download it.
I don’t think they are HTTPS… However, I did find this on the squid website that could affect windows updates caching:
“Windows Update apparently uses HTTP Range-Offsets’ (AKA file partial ranges) to grab pieces of the Microsoft Update archive in parallel or using a random-access algorithm trying to reduce the web traffic. Some versions of Squid do not handle or store Ranges very well yet.”
I realize Mikrotik is not squid… but… it could still apply.
So… the only way to find out is to try it and see. Of course, with RB750, there is no way this will turn out well with such little disk space.
By the way, you are 100% correct that Mikrotik can not proxy HTTPS.
Yes, an external proxy like squid can cache Windows Updates. They even have a section on their website dealing specifically with that.
The proxy would plug into on of the RB750 lan ports. You will still use the Mikrotik Proxy, and it then use your external proxy. You will have as much disk space as available in your external proxy, which could be as much as you want to spend on hard drives for that machine. Look in the proxy part of winbox to see the external settings.
I believe you could also completely bypass the Mikrotik proxy and send all traffic directly to the external proxy… either way should accomplish the same thing, but the general consesus that I’ve seen seems to indicate it is better to use the Mikrotik proxy, that in turns uses your external proxy.
Look at the squid website to see all the features it offers. Remember, once you start using squid, this will not be the proper forum to ask squid-specific questions. They should have their own forum for specific squid questions. Questions regarding connecting the Mikrotik to the squid proxy should be fine though.
Also, squid is not the only proxy available… it is just a popular free one. There are many others too.
So can Mikrotik connect to ANY external proxy???
So squid, ipcop etc???
Which free proxy would you recommend???
One that can do windows updates, is easy to set up and preferably GUI
I have quite allot of experiance with ipcop, but i use it at home and i do have quite a few problems with its proxy,
often some sites just wont work. they go all messed up, on facebook when you click submit or something it gives an error, but the update accelerator works amazingly, with windows saves me so much internet, instead of 15 computers downloads sp3 *200MB each only one does, and then every time i build a pc for a client, i click update,a nd it just downlaods all the updates from my proxy in no time.
But if you want to be using the proxy on your main Internet connection for a small ISP you dont want it giving you shit with some sites, esp common ones.
Would you put a proxy on a main internet connection for a ISP???
my thoughts are:
Pros,
will save you bandwidth, will increase clients browsing speed
The stability of third party proxy’s is not related to the Mikrotik router. If the proxy works fine normally, it will work fine through Mikrotik. If the proxy has problems normally, it will still have problems through Mikrotik. Mikrotik won’t magically make a third party proxy work better… Mikrotik is simply a client to that proxy, just as your computer is.
Ok, but you said cons of a proxy would include “nasty problems”. That all depends on the proxy that you use and its configuration. If you are worried about those problems with IPCop, then obviously you should look for a different one… but again, this has nothing to do with Mikrotik.
I also have ipcop and my ipcop is working correclty. I still have some problems with internet when i setup routing on my mikrotik rb’s. The problem that i have is that i cannot ping past eth1(red internet on ipcop) when i ping from mikrotik router.
That is not a mikrotik issue. You worded it almost to sound like it is the fault of mikrotik… “problems with internet when i setup routing on my mikrotik rb’s”.
That link you posted indicates this is an ipcop issue, and should be discussed on the ipcop forum, not here.
