Mikrotik RB750GL or TP-Link Archer A6 as home router

Hello everybody!

I’m using a TP-Link Archer A6 as home router, paired with my ISP modem (currently bridged), an Arris TG2482A. Right now I got around 20 devices in my network (some over ethernet and some over WiFi), but since I got a connection with download bandwith of 150Mbps, and whe I use that whole bandwith, the CPU of my Archer A6 goes up to 100% utilization and the other devices start lagging out.

I got a Mikrotik RB750GL that I have been using as a switch, and I’m wondering if that small Mikrotik would do a better job as a router than the Archer A6. If that’s the case I would like to get some tips please, about how to set it up and I would just use the Archer A6 as access point.

I got in my network 3 smart TVs, an smart fridge, a pair of amazon echos, an xbox, like 5 smart bulbs, 2 PCs, 4 smart phones, a raspberry pi, some smart plugs. Soon I wil get a security camera and a NAS and I would like headroom for maybe another 5 devices. So the internal network is becoming a concern.

Also I got an extra gigabit switch, and my network is wired with CAT6 cables.

Thanks a lot for your help.

RB750GL is old and (for current standards) underpowered device. It would likely cap at around same performance as your Archer.

Thanks for your answer. So, would it be a good idea to get another device for my current network? If so, what would be a good budget option if I want another Mikrotik?

A decent router would be RB750Gr3 (pretty much ancestor of your device). Device with probably best price/performance ratio for homd users is a RBD52G. It’s got wireless as well, but if you don’t need that, you can simply disable it.

I have a RB750G r3 with a 150MB link. Never had problem with CPU, make 5-6% at full load. Another story is it if you try to use VPN or other stuff that are CPU hungry. So it depends on you use.

Router OS are very fleksible and can do a lot of stuff if you like to setup various functions.
