Mikrotik router loses internet when iPhone connected

Hi,

I have a Mikrotik RB915G-2HnD router and the problem is that sometimes when I start using the wifi from my iPhone 5 (7.0.4) every once in a while this makes the router go inaccessible - all devices lose internet, the wifi signal does not disappear but there is no internet access. Usually this lasts 1-2 mins and then it goes back to normal. This can happens basically regardless of what app is using the internet (Facebook / e-mail / Safari). It does not happen all the time, but often enough to make it annoying.

Some background info on the router: it is set up with 2x wifi signals, one wifi connects to the internet directly, while the second wifi signal connects to the internet through a VPN service.

For example I am streaming a movie through the VPN service and I connect my iPhone to the regular (non-VPN) wifi signal and then a few seconds later the streaming stops, the router’s IP address (192.168.1.1) becomes inaccessible, and none of the devices (neither VPN or non-VPN) at home have internet connection. Turning the router on and off solves the problem immediately, though if I don’t do that, sometimes I have to wait for 1-2 minutes before the internet comes back. The router was set up for the masking the non-VPN and VPN services by an IT expert friend of mine - who unfortunately was not able to figure out the problem. I have the latest package and Routerboard software installed.

Anyone has any idea what could be causing this

Any help would be very much appreciated!

Thanks,
Andras

I just started to investigate this problem with my RB751-G with v6.10 but the problem has been existing for 6 months or so. I notice the cutoffs of internet connection on the computers and apple TV that are wired to the router, but there are episodes of wireless issues but they are harder to prove vs. microwave interference and the like. I have iPhone and iPad traffic on the router.

You are not alone; my symptoms are identical. I would have to say I did not see this issue a year ago, but I do not recall the version of router code running then.

I do not know the cause, but I thought I should add this post for now.

Steve

Steve,

The issues I had got solved when I upgraded to version 6.x more than a month ago. Even since I’ve upgraded the software/firmware, not once did I have the same old problem.

As far as interference is concerned, for me using inSSIDer program to see what other wifi signals my router is overlapping with and adjusting the channel to get a better score definitely did the trick. You might very well know all this already, I know that most people on this forum are more experienced, than I am, though just saying.

Andras,

I have identical setup for my customer too: Regular Internet and VPN tunnel, both on separate SSIDs. All his equipment is Apple (iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, etc). His complaints are that the devices are loosing internet connection on both SSIDs every 10 minutes and go out for 2-4 minutes while signals stays strong all the time. I was not able to reproduce these issues with regular laptops. This cannot be a coincidence. The most interesting part is that with the same setup being in place he had working WiFi for almost a year. I suspect that this might have been caused by a software update, but who knows. In my case I have MT WiFi devices sending all the data to main MT router.

One thing that does pops in my mind is that I had those WiFi only running in “b/g” mode, but later on I enabled “b/g/n”. I’ll hate to test it out and see if removing “n” mode fixes the problem.
