Mikrotik RouterOS Upgrading Issue....Please Assist.

Hello There! I have an old Mikrotik RB433AH having version 3.10 and working great at remote site. I would like to upgrade this with the latest one RouterOS v6.34 . I have tried this through winbox with copy paste, but it didn’t work at all. Any Mikrotik expert please help me how to upgrade from this version to latest one. I have also come to know that while MT router board tried to upgrade from older version to newer one it gets corrupted/hang up and don’t powered up and work again. So i am abit skeptical using any method and looking for an experienced MT expert to assist me on this how to do this exactly. Any help would be heartly appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry to ask:
Why would you alter something that’s working great, especially in a remote location?
Do you really need some new functionality not available in the old version?
Don’t fix it if it ain’t broken!

Hello Docmarius! Thanks for your reply.

Actually, i would like to replace this RB433AH with low powered RB, as there is not much use out there at remote site for this high powered RB. I need to have install this RB urgently because wasn’t anyone spared at that time now i have a one to install there and want to take this RB433AH to back and upgrade with newest version.

Yes! i would like to get to know and give try to work with these some new functionalities with new RouterOS on this board.

Hope you understand.

If the routerboard is in remote, I would not recommend the update because it is a huge jump in OS version and it can go wrong.
If it is on your desk, you probably would need first to update to ROS 4.x or 5.x (check the legacy on download page) because the 3.10 has still the old license system with 7 letters instead of 8. Once you have updated the ROS it will ask to update your license.
If this is still impossible for you, try netinstall (it will still require to update the license I believe).
And ROS 6.34 is not the latest, it is the release candidate, not the current one.

Hello Caci99! Thanks for your reply. Its on my desk and remote site replaced with other one, but i’m a bit afraid to give a try to upgrade process because of RB can goes to corrupt or brick during upgradation if any. So i would also looking for backup process if it goes to corrupt or brick can board be recovered or not? Thanks.

There is always a slim chance that something can go wrong (unfortunately) but not much to be worried.
I would recommend these steps:

  1. Backup your config using export command from terminal.
  2. reset the router with no defaults.
  3. update to legacy ROS, 5.x I believe.
  4. update license and then firmware (for the firmware to be updated you need to reboot the router).
  5. At this point try update to 6.33.3 and update firmware
  6. If for any reason after update the router does not boot up, use the hard reset button of the routerboard. It can be a problem with the firmware in which cases I have found out that hard reset helps.
