Hi,
I am asked to help a fellow shipmate to research his Winbox Repeater station and we know somewhere in the boat there is a mikrotik router involved.
We are not technicians and the installation we found in the boat works and we now how to Winbox dedicated laptop connect to an external free wifi hotspot and then we have our own wifi AP in the boat connecting us to the Hotspot. The set is about 6 years old as far as we know. The problem is obvious: the set cannot connect to public wifi with some kind of security protocol like WPA2/PSK etc. It seems it can only connect to free wifi.
Does anyone recognize this wifi repeater set and can you please help, give some tips so we can connect to WPA2/PSK in the winbox terminal?
Kind regards from our boat in the netherlands.
Aad
You need to edit the security profile to enable wpa2/psk
I suggest that you make a copy of the existing profile and make your changes in the new profile (name it WPA2 or something like that).
Name it something specific like “WPA2”
Set the mode to “dynamic keys”
Enable Authentication Type WPA2
Check all 4 checkboxes for Unicast and Group Ciphers
Set the WPA2 Pre-Shared key to be whatever the wifi password is
Apply/OK this window to close it.
Whenever you need to connect to a WPA2 network, go into the wireless interface and change the security profile from Default to WPA2
(whenever you need to connect to an open wireless, just switch back to default)
ZeroByte thanks! As said: we are not technicians in Microtik environment and we are very glad someone give us some tips. The repeater Wifi was build into the boat years ago by a shop who is not into Mikrotik any more. We sure are gonna try out your tips. Thanks and I will come back later here!
We managed to create a second profile as you suggested and we can see that the protocols in thist profile are available.
However we did not succeed to use this profile instead of the default profile. I am sorry but we are missing something because we are Mikrotik newbees.
(the wifi repeater-set was installed by a shop years ago when wifi here and there was open. Nowadays wifi is needs more and more passwords etc).
So you suggested: go into interfaces and use the new profile. We cannot find where to ‘use’ this.
Please help, us to find this final step!
Thanks in advance,
Aad
There should be a drop-down selection in the Wireless tab of the interface configuration: “Security Profile”
This is where you would select your other profile.
