MIMO, chains

Hello,

I have many mikrotik APs, mostly RB2011s, cAPs, RB912Uis. I have changed 802.11b/g to 802.11only-n, and I’m not sure what is the best MIMO setting for AP.
I have read articles about MIMO, SIMO, MISO etc, 2x2, 3x3, I also want to buy the new RB4011 with 4x4…

What is the best setup? Is it better to use one chain for Rx, one for Tx, or select all the chains available for everything?
By default, only chain0 si selected (for both TX and RX).

Are there any good tweaks for Mikrotiks, other than default? Usually I only change band, channel width, frequency, Antenna Gain with regulatory-domain.

I know wireless basics, but I’m not sure if I understand correctly this MIMO & chains stuff etc.

thanks

If you don’t know better, use all available chains for both Tx and Rx and let HW and SW to make best out of it.

There were some ROS versions with some problems regarding this setting. So upgrade to latest version of your liking (long term is 6.42.11, stable is 6.43.8 ) and enable everything in this section.

I was not aware MT equipment was MIMO capable???

MIMO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) is standard term for the same thing as MT is doing using multiple chains. If MT device is declared to be 802.11n (or ac) capable and has 2 or more Tx/Rx chains, it’s doing 2x2MIMO (or 4x4 in case of RB4011 on 5GHz or 3x3 in case of hAP ac (non-squared) on both bands …). It can be 802.11n but only have 1 Tx/Rx chain (hAP ac lite on 5GHz), then it’s not MIMO.
