The hAP ac2 seemed like a viable workaround, but with less than 128MB storage, it is no go.

I don’t know about such discussion. The search tool is not very effective.
You have USB port on hap ac2 to extend storage though… 
Which is indeed needed as ARM SW package is quit big compared to MIPS
