Missing something... Setting up RB411AR w/N card as AP

This is basic, but I’m sure that I’m missing something. I just got my RB411AR (built in B/G card) with an additional R52Hn card. I’ve got it setup on the network, but am having trouble getting the access points setup.

I’ve followed the tutorial in the Mikrotik Wiki, but at the point where it says to give the interface an IP address, I do and it tells me that the address is invalid… hum? I have the APs setup and can see the SSID from the clients and connect, but am not getting an IP address.


My network:

Internet ↔ Cable Modem ↔ Mikrotik RB450G ↔ Gigabit Switch ↔ RB411AR

The RB450G is my internet router and runs the DHCP server for the network. I have the RB411AR getting a DHCP address from the RB450G (configured as a static DHCP reservation).


What I would like is to run the 411 simply as an access point with two SSID networks. One B/G 2.4GHz and one N 5GHz. I’d also like the IP addresses to still be passed out via DHCP from the main RB540G.

Seems like some thing is not setup to pass traffic from the wireless networks to the ethernet, but I can’t figure it out.

me thinks you need to add wlan and ether1 to your bridge, then set the bridge as the interface to get an IP address from the RB450G.

Ah, I knew it was something simple.

Ok, so I went back and reset to defaults, deleted the IP for the ether1, then created a bridge and assigned the bridge as the DHCP client.

Then I setup the SSIDs for each AP, and assigned each device to the bridge group. Immediately traffic started passing and I was able to get internet access through the AP. I’m actually posting from it now and able to switch between the B/G network and the N network.

Now, is there a reference for what to setup for optimal AP settings for home use with a mix of Macs, PCs, iPhones, and Androids? For instance, which wireless protocol, use Nstream, use NV2, etc?
