Monitoring a service

Hi all,

I’m brand new to the Dude; just installed it today. I have two issues that I think will be easy to solve for the veterans on this forum.

  1. The main reason I need a network monitor solution is so that I know when a specific service goes down on a Windows Server 2003 machine.

I tried fumbling through the Dude to figure out how to monitor that service, and I’ve looked for a user manual with detailed instructions on service monitoring with no luck, so now I’m turning to the experts.

2) Only a handful of my desktops (all running Windows XP Pro) are showing up on my map. The image I’m using to roll out my desktops has Windows Firewall turned off, so maybe there is a service that I need to start?

Any help on either problem would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, David

Can the server running the dude ping every computer on the network?

There is a probe thread stickied, search it for “service” also search The dude forum for “service” since I think some of the information is not in the probe thread but I am fairly certain it is. Also search for Discover to get some ideas on using auto discover.

I don’t use auto discover. I manually add every device.

If you want to collect specific services on specific machines you will need snmp turned on. Note: Sometimes when manually adding a device the dude discovers 4.2G services, this is a bug, just delete that device and click the undo button and it will fix that. There are a few other trivial

Enjoy, The Dude is a great tool.
