Multiple hap ax2 issues...

I’ve been using MikroTik products for years and when I recently saw the hap ax2 US version advertised, I thought there would be no better product to lead with in introducing 5ghz/ac wireless to my network.

I COULD NOT HAVE BEEN MORE MISTAKEN!

I wish now that I had never seen let alone bought it because I fear I may be stuck with the thing. It drops connections repeatedly, the 5ghz band doesn’t broadcast more than half the time, and the Winbox parameters don’t always seem to “stick” even after hitting apply. And yes, I upgraded to the latest version of RouterOS.

I’ve spent several fruitless hours trying to get it to communicate across the network. The missing 5ghz band continues to defy resolution. And yes, my devices support 5ghz. They can see another 5ghz network without any issue.

Very disappointing! Judging from some of the other posts in this forum I’m not the only one having issues with this device and its cousin the hap ac2.

Topic title and first post don’t agree on product. Which is it? hAP ac2 or hAP ax2
This topic suggests hAP ax2 issues are making progress http://forum.mikrotik.com/t/hap-ax2-randomly-drops-wifi-ssids-both-2-4-and-5ghz/162595/1
What is the goal here? Emotional catharsis (rant)? Technical issue resolution? Both?

Same questions …

Having AC2 with a customer and still having AX2 at home, I can not say I have any problems with those devices (for my use cases).

It might be helpful to indicate how you brought that AX2 (assuming we’re talking about that) in operation.
Backup from AC2 and restore on AX2 ? Other way ?
How are you intending to use that device ?

In case we need more detail, please provide export of config, leave out serial number and any sensitive info (public Wan IP ? …) and post between code quotes so we can see where you went wrong.

Sorry hap ax2. I thought I corrected that.

As for the purpose, a bit of both.

And the fact that they are making progress on an issue (wifi going awol) that’s been a problem since December of last year is encouraging. Like I said, I wish now that I had known I was buying a device that apparently is still in the gamma stage.

I upgraded the RouterOS through Winbox so I shouldn’t be missing any component packets. I know the last thing tech wants to hear at MT is that the problem is still there but it is still there.

The device is simply being used as an access point. At one time it was broadcasting a 5ghz band and now it doesn’t.

MT staff occasionally drops in but they certainly don’t read all posts here.

Still unanswered questions:

Have this exact device installed at my parents: rock solid. Can you share your config to make sure you have optimized settings?

/export file=anynameyoulike

Remove serial and any other private information like public IP.

Oops…this was requested already…

you have wrongly setup country or DSF detection on. Before crying study the HW.

Installed ax2 at my parents house, they have one pc and rest of the devices, including IPTV are connected via wireless and they have zero issues…

I still fail to see a config from a certain user …

I will post the config file later when I get home although it will just read the factory defaults of the latest version of the RouterOS since I did a reset before setting it aside last night.

Ok, here’s the much anticipated config file!

I think I deleted all sensitive information. Be gentle please!

And just to clarify, I do not now nor have I ever owned a hap ac2. I apologise for the initial confusion.

I’ve simply plugged the hap ax2 into the network where another access point used to be. The issue did not appear until I upgraded from 7.6 to 7.11. Prior to that I could see and connect to the 5ghz band.

Hopefully that will answer any questions up to this point.

So… are you intend to use ax2 just as an access point ? Or do you need routing functionality ? To which port do you connect your cable from the old AP ?

From your config file I can see that you are using default configuration. I would suggest you to set frequency manually, skip DFS channels if possible. Don’t leave it on auto.

I have 2 AX2 devices, both of them are on 7.11.2 and there is no problem with them.

Same recommendations to start

  • don’t use auto
  • avoid DFS channels
  • move to 7.11.2

Would any of that prevent it from broadcasting the 5ghz wifi band? Because it is not doing it right now.

I will make those adjustments later but it seems to me it would broadcast the 5ghz wifi band on default settings.

And I am using it as both an access point with routing functionality. The cable from my network plugs directly into the one saying Internet.

Also, the adjustments you recommend, can they be made from Winbox and are there any tutorials on the MikroTik website?

If DFS channel was selected and radar is being detected, yes, there will be no broadcast for 5 to 10 minutes (depending on which channel was used).
Then it will broadcast again until it detects radar again.
And round and round the circle goes …

Why do you think we recommend NOT to use AUTO ??
To rule out this problem !

Open Winbox, go to wireless - tab wifiwave2 and show what’s being displayed there.

Where and how in Winbox can I do these things? Set the frequency to what specifically? If not on auto what is it to be set on? How do I skip DFS channels? Reading that config file it appears to be doing that already unless I am mistaken.

I’m glad your devices are on 7.11.2 and working fine. This one isn’t.

If not AUTO then on what?

And what am I looking for on wifiwave2 on the wireless tab?

Under the Radios tab on wifi1, which is the 5ghz band, the wifi1 is italicised and wifi2 is not. Not sure what that means.

Now I’m the one who isn’t getting answers from “certain users”!

Again, set the frequency to what specifically? If not on auto, what is it to be set on? How do I skip DFS channels?

I’m willing to read or watch tutorials. Just point me in the right direction. Googling it hasn’t come to the rescue so far. That’s why I posted here.

Also, the device has been on 7.11.2 for some time now. That is clearly stated in previous posts and the config file. As I stated in a previous post, that is when my issues began. When I was at 7.6 I could connect on the 5ghz band. I made the mistake of following the manufacturer’s advice and upgrading.

Count yourself fortunate if your devices at 7.11.2 are working.

I think I may try a downgrade and go from there.

Hold your horses there …
you post 3 times in less then 30 minutes and then complain you don’t get a response back ?

Again, this forum is for USERS helping other users. Some of those also need to WORK.
Also keep in mind this is a GLOBAL forum. There are time differences. I am in Europe, don’t know where you are.

If you want to get sito presto response, consider hiring a consultant.
You are the one having a problem, not us.
You need help, not us.
You may want to consider changing tone a bit given those conditions …

Having said that …

As asked, please post picture of what Winbox is showing.
Your text is not clarifying a lot.

If you can open a terminal, use this command.
/export file=anynameyouwish

Then in File section, locate that file and drag and drop to your computer.
Open the file using text editor, remove serial number of your device and (if present) public WAN ip.
Then post content of that edited file in between code quotes, makes it easier for us to read.
And then we have a full view on your config so we can see where you need to change what.
