During the MikroTik User Meeting in Prague next week, we will have the so-called BoF (Birds of a feather) meetings. During the BoF, people can gather in groups to talk about topics of common interest. You supply the input and gain from others’ inputs and ideas and suggestions. Volunteer moderators will be there to direct the discussion.
Now, for a true BoF, you need to give us the topics of discussion. We will post them in the BoF info board, and people will sign up, so that we see which meatings are the most requested (because space is limited). Those meetings will then take place after the first day of the MUM. Meeting time will be one hour.
In this topic, please suggest a topic - like “wireless security in an airport hotspot scenario”. (suggest!)

“antenna selection” sounds like an interesting discussion topic. SIP helper has only one simple purpose - to help SIP go though NAT. Nothing to discuss there.
The “antenna selection” for different scenarios is a nice topic. It will be interesting to hear from different experiences and point of views how others do the selection of the antennas they use.
“different ways of powering the equipment” (suggest!)
would be a nice topic to discuss. This can include measurements of power needed by different RBs and cards, the ways of powering when there is no continous power supply (like wind, solar, etc), type of protections against over surges, and also (this maybe is a little out of topic) type of protections against atmospheric surges.
Another interesting topic would be a good, reliable example of Parent Queues.
Balancing the bandwidth between users when it is not fully used is an important
issue. I know there is pcq queue but I would like to see any other solution if ever made.
Also, these option should be implemented in the hotspot dynamic queues.
I’m basically interested in if anyone has built anything that eases the configuration of the CPE’s. For instance, it could be helpful if you could put a single configuration on all your RouterBoard devices, put them in a pile and send them to your customers. Through some scripting action, it would then fetch a configuration from a remote server when it’s turned on.
This is the idea I have:
Imagine being a wireless ISP and using some sort of RB device as customer CPE. Now every time one of your engineers installed a new customer, they didn’t need to configure the device. When your device logs on to the base station, it would request an IP address through DHCP, some system would monitor the DHCP server and provide a configuration file for the router to fetch and import. Devices could be tracked using their mac address…
This is just the idea that I have (and working a little bit on), and I wrote here also to hear how people do configuration management in general, eg. managing many devices and their configuration. Configuring every device by hand can be a dull process when you have enough customers.
While I will not be attending the mum, auto-provisioning or setup scripts intrigue me much. I know some pre-configuration can be done with net-installation. I was getting boards from wisp-router that had a bunch of their junk already in it. Care to spin this off to a new thread?
