Need a new router; RB5009 or wait?

Hi all,

Anyone knows if there is an RB5009 successor coming up?

Currently using an RB5009 at one of my sites. Running just fine.
Now there is a new location I have to get a router for. Probably will be a 2Gbps connection. Just because it is just as expensive as a 1Gbps connection (yes: overkill).
In NL speeds can go up to 8Gbps for home users (yes: overkill).
Want to use LAG as little as possible so at least 2 x 10Gbps would be nice.

Not that RB5009 wouldn’t be able to handle these speeds but it is the port selection that might get me in to trouble since I actually don’t want to use LAG. Yes, I know CCR2004 but yeah… Talking about overkill… So looking for something in between.

Better an egg today?
The hen tomorrow might be better, though.

A RB5009 is such a good for anything device for the price that having a spare one (when/if the hypothetical hen will be available) that the 220 $ or so spent today for one are not wasted, and AFAIK they sell used at relatively high prices, like 150 $ or so.

See your point. It is still a private investment so I would be bummed if I would buy the egg today because I would have missed the hen being available tomorrow.

Post about the hAP ax S was what got me thinking. Combined with the wish to have at least 2 10Gbps ports on my next router made me think it wouldn’t hurt to check if someone would have heard about the hen already

Yep, but the possible issue with completely new devices (as it happened recently with the hex refresh and hex s (2025)) can be that initially there might be some corners still needing to be rounded, so - even if tomorrow a suitable new device comes out - personally I would wait a few months to see what the experience of early adoppters is, particularly if - like in your case - the money comes out of my own pockets.
But of course everyone has his/her own ways to deal with new things.

It's always a problem of "to buy or not to buy" in the IT.
I would advise buying RB5009 and then immediatelly you should

  • stop watching/looking for "better" bargains for a month or longer to stay calm
  • start crying as "you have just bought an obsolete and overpriced crap"

Or just read the threads where users are complaining about the newly released device not doing what it should. Then you can smile and think "I sure am glad I didn't buy that before the bugs were worked out."

It's more like buying a laying hen (RB5009) vs a new chick from a better genetic line (RBnext). The chick may have a longer remaining life, but it may take a while before it starts providing a steady supply of eggs.

"Marry, and you will regret it; don't marry, you will also regret it; marry or don't marry, you will regret it either way... This, gentlemen, is the essence of all philosophy." Danish philosopher Søren Kierkegaard. "no matter what you do, you will regret it" is a popular summary

Worth waiting for an RB5009 successor?

Since you need the router now, you need to choose from what is currently available and in stock. The RB5009 is what I would get.

Thanks for your reply. Great quote from Mr. Kierkegaard by the way.
If I would have needed the router like now now then I would have had no choice. I can however move it forward somewhat. So if there is something new coming up I could delay buying and make it work with what I have at the moment. Temporarily using ax2 or something.

Fair point on the possible bugs on newly released products. Even though I have some expertise there are also situations in which I want ‘it to just work’.

So stay with 5009. Seems to be stable enough to invest in it.

Just to let you guys know; I got me a used RB5009UPr+S+IN. It came up second hand for less then an RB5009 without PoE. Seemed like it was ment to be so I decided to take the opportunity.

Thanks for your responses.
