need more power than rb1100

Hi,

I’m using a RB1100 which acts as an access concentrator router. It is servicing +400 customers with PPPoE and DHCP services and for each customer there is a simple queue. The problem is that at peak time it is reaching 100% CPU usage and it seems it is not providing the subscribed bandwidth to customers. The queues are quite simple: almost all queues are a 1 Mbit/s with a 4 Mbit/s burst for 10 seconds each minute. The peak bandwidth is ~40-50 Mbit/s.

It is not clear to me if something can be done in the RB1100 to increase the capacity or I need a more powerful equipment (at this point it is not possible to partition in different routers).

  1. The PPPoE customers can be moved to DHCP so the PPPoE termination is not longer required. Is the PPPoE termination CPU intensive enough to reduce the router load significatively if disabled?

  2. Which X86 equpiment is it recomended (1U rackable short, without disk, only CF or SD with routeros), available in Europe and capable of handling up to 1000 customers with the above specifications?

Thank you for any feedback!
Antonio

Could you provide profiler image so we can help you determine what’s eating all CPU?

Hi,

thank you for your reply. Unfortunately the router is in the top of a mountain (+1600 meters) and it is running 4.17 since months… Next week I’m going to the site to update some links. I’ll also update to 5.14 once I go to the site and execute the profile.

I’ll keep you posted. Any x86 platform recommendation?

Best Regards,
Antonio
