netinstall for ax2

Cannot get this ax2 to appear in netinstall..

I can reset the device, hard code ip 88.2 to the pc, start as admin, disable firewall.. disable ipv6 and WiFi interface
(win10 N ltsc)

I have wireshark going.. I don’t see any bootp requests or tftp(assuming it’s bootp)

I do see port 67 and 69 attached to the netinstall checked the boot server enabled set the client ip to 88.3

Can login via winbox over Mac and set the try-ethernet-one-than-nand

I’ve tried all ports eth1 → eth5

All show up in mac telnet none show in netinstall

What am I missing..

Thank you in advance

Concentrate on working with ether1, other ports aren’t used for netinstall process.

Then follow this sequence (it worked most of times on all of my devices):

  1. connect cable between ether1 and PC
  2. setup PC appropriately (e.g. disable firewall, excess network interfaces, …)
  3. start netinstall executable and appropriately set it up
  4. optionally start wireshark and start capturing traffic on netinstall interface
  5. press reset button on RB device and kerp it pressed until further
  6. apply power to RB
  7. wait until you see BOOTP traffic in wireshark (or for netinstall to show RB on list of detected devices)
  8. stop pressing the reset button. It’s often hard to keep it pressed all this time (can be a minute) without momentarily letting it off, to me this is the hardest part of whole netinstall process …
  9. perform netinstall …

Netinstall only works on “boot” port (usually ether1).
Winbox (usually) only works on non-WAN ports (normally ether 2+)

It sounds more an issue of some kind with netinstall, that stuff is tricky, there are more than a few reports that it is easier on Linux and very finnicky on Windows 10/11.

But you should see the bootp packets with wireshark (on “boot” port aka ether1):

P.S.: Sorry mkx, didn’t see your post

I have higher chance of doing netinstall in linux VS windows 10/11 but if your hands are tied make it sure that you disable all lan adapters in windows except for the wired LAN and disable windows firewall to make it sure, ether1 is the port you are going to use for netinstall, In my experience you have to hold the reset button until to the very end for the netinstall to work specially in RB5009, just my 0.2$

(Thank you - I’m pulling my hair out over here..)

so ltsc seemed to be the problem, went to a regular win10 pro 22h2 and ether1 was exactly where it showed up from..

Now it shows In netinstall..

Can’t seem to send routeros package..

Status says ready, highlight package, click install

Sending offer… Status says installing

No Ethernet traffic

When I try and send I have a protocol TAPA:

Tunnel V=0 T=Type 0[Malformed Packet]

88.2 → 255.255.255.255

Ethernet card is a on board Realtek PCIe GbE card (HP Laptop)

IP v4 is the only thing enabled.. disabled netbios..

Disabled flow control
IPV4 for check sum offload disabled
Large send offload V2 IPv4 disabled
Ns Offload disabled
TCP checksum offload disabled
UDP checksum offload disabled

Restarted a netinstall

And everything worked

“Installation finished successfully”

Assuming it was the UDP checksum offload.. as everything showing in wire shark was UDP..

And when I go back into Files, Everything is gone.. (perfect)

Just a directory “skins” (weird)

System license still has a software ID and it shows level 4

(Whew!)

So hard..

It’s easier this way

If nothing else, reading that will give you insights into the necessary complexities in this process, as opposed to the unnecessary ones imposed by pressing a general-purpose Windows laptop into this role instead.

Where does the .scr file come from..

And I’ll give it a try on Alpine when I need it again.

Thank you

It is the “Default Router Configuration Script” given immediately below the “-s reset.scr” bit that references it. If you don’t like mine, write one that configures the router as you please.

Struggled with detecting Netinstall on ax2 a bit, Here is my successful path:

  1. Connect to Port 1 (“Internet”)
  2. Power up while pressing Reset and keep pressing.
  3. USR LED will start blinking, then light steady, then off. This time release the Reset.
  4. White a bit. Device will appear in Netinstall not immediately but in some 30 sec.
    Works in Win11 25H2
