Netmask to Network and Broadcast when setting IP?

Hi,

I am about to place an RB750 between my network and a VSAT Modem. Replacing a Cyberoam network management unit…

I telnet into the VSAT modem (Idirect Evolution 3) and laninfo gives me IP: 10.154.11.1 Netmask: 255.255.255.240, this being the ethernet port on the modem.

The device currently in service (the Cyberoam) has an IP of 10.154.11.2 on the ethernet port connected to the VSAT modem.

I assume I am going to need to set the ether1 on the RB750 to 10.154.11.2 to allow me to use it to replace the device currently in service? My question is: What network and broadcast settings for the ether1 IP on the RB750? 10.154.11.0 and 10.154.11.255?

Thanks

Scratching around I have found an IP calculator that gives me Network of 10.154.11.0 and broadcast of 10.154.11.15. This is a production unit so I am hoping to get a “plug 'n play” changeover response, hence my question  Am I on the right track here?

Yes, that is correct.

However, there is no need to fill those values out. They will be automatically populated as long as you set an IP address in CIDR notation.

But if you’re going to be configuring production network gear it would probably be a good idea to spend an hour or two and read some online tutorials on how TCP/IP works.

seems like during initial setup somebody added 10.154.11.N/24 address, and then changed it to correct address 10.154.11.N/28, but haven’t cleared ‘broadcast’ address, so it remained the same as before

Thanks guys, the 750 is now in service… All working sweet.
