New user- need help! Please!

Hi,
I installed a RB260GSP switch in my attic to feed a NVR and an AP (Ubiquiti).
The switch is connected to an Ubiquiti switch via port 1, and it worked fine straight out of the box.
However, I am unable to access the switch while it’s connected.
I thought I could connect to the switch directly via an ethernet cable, as per Mikrotik instructions, and change it’s default IP to something like 192.168.1.xx, so I would be able to log into it without directly connecting to it.
I changed my laptop’s IP to static 192.168.88.2, and was able to log into the switch, but as soon as I tried to change switch IP to 192168.1.58, I lost connection.
I also was unable to update the SW. I tried to connect the switch to my wired network via port 5, while connected to my laptop via port 1, but the upgrade failed (a few times).

Please, tell me what I am doing wrong.
I’d like to know if it is necessary to update the switch (its SW is from 2017), and if it is possible to change the IP to 192.168.1.xx;
What exactly (steps?) would I need to do to update the switch and to change the IP (if possible).
It’s working fine so I guess I can leave it alone as well, but still would like to know the answers to the questions above.

thanks a lot.

That would be correct. As soon as you changed the IP on the switch to 192.168.1.58, your PC can no longer access the switch until you change the IP of your PC to something in the same subnet.

Hi Jim,
thanks for replying to my post.
After changing the switch IP, I changed the laptop’s IP back to DHCP.
Should I have changed it to static IP, on the same subnet?
The whole idea of changing the IP of the switch was to be able to “reach” it from the laptop, without pulling it out from the attic.
Also, do you know if there is a documented procedure on upgrading the switch?
Thanks.

UPDATE:
Checked using Chrome with the new IP address- and was able to access the switch.
It upgraded just fine.

However, after the upgrade, I am unable to connect to it, again.

Did the upgrade process reset the IP to the default 192.168.88.1?

Thanks

download winbox from website it will be easier to see what ip have the router or if smth is wrong you can connect to it via his MAC address.
