Hello, I am a newbie and I’m having a hard time understanding how to setup vlans. I am planning on purchasing a RB260GS switch for a home project that involves testing some popular router distros like pfsense/ipfire etc. I have an hp thinclient with a dual-core via cpu that i’d like to use a the router. The problem is that this thinclient only has 1 nic. My options at this point are either find a compatible usb nic or VLAN. I’d rather not go the route of using a usb nic do to performance/stability so I started looking at using vlans. This is where I get completely lost. I understand the concept of vlans but not necessarily how to configure it.
I would like to setup my network like this for testing purposes and then if testing goes well replace my current dlink router. I read the mikrotik swos wiki and now I am even more confused than before. This is what my network would look like if I were to setup a homemade router and a mikrotik switch
Modem → dlink router → mikrotek switch → homemade router
lets say the dlink router would plug into port 1 on the mikrotek switch
port 2 on the mikrotek switch would plug into the homemade router
ports 3-5 on the mikrotek switch would be for pc’s accessing the network
clients would still connect physically to the mikrotik switch but I would need to direct the traffic through the homemade router and then back through the mikrotek switch to the internet. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
