New very dumb guy, 900 mhz, mother n law, wife aggro

Hello All

I am new to most of this. I will never be one of the guys here who can answer all the questions but a guy on EBAY told me to come here and that you were are good group.

My Mother N Law lives out in the Sticks of Williamsport Indiana. She has wanted better than dial up internet for a decade now and 1 short mile away I can get her internet.

The ground is FLAT but there are 2 groves of ASH/OAK trees between her and the internet source.

***Because I am such a good son N law and my wife is threatening to with hold HANKY PANKY my mother N law told 2 of her friends in the same situation that I would fix them up too *****

After a few nights of pulling my hair out trying to understand wireless internet I decided 900 mhz was my best bet and mikrotik seemed to be able to do ANYTHING …

ON EBAY I bought

RB433 to be my access point with a gz-901 radio card, a couple of yagi antenna’s and power stuff to make the rb433 turn on. This stuff has been shipped and should arrive in 6 days.

That is ALL I have for now. So… I NEED

To take internet through trees 1 mile .093 miles to be exact.
I need to know what radio cards are the best (cheapest) so my mother N law will be happy.
I need to know if the RB433 is a good option to make the Access Point out of.
I need to know what RB would be good for the home ends of the link as well as what radio cards I should use there?

All 3 LADIES are within 120 degrees of the SOURCE, should I use 3 radios and 3 yagi’s or 1 radio and an omni?

Does any other equipment (ie canopy or others) connect to a microtik 900 mhz access point and work well? The reason I ask is because I have seen several models with built in antenna all in one water proof unit so that would make things SIMPLE for me.

The access point routerboard is going to need to be in some kind of weather proof box??? What do you guys use?

On the router board, the nice guy I bought it from updated it to 6.2. Is this a good version for what I am trying to do?

I am sure I have 1000 other questions I am simply to dumb to know I need answers too.

Anyhow thats about it, all about keeping the wife happy and me relaxed. I am not rich so CHEAP is important but having it work most days is a really good thing too.

Also, do any of you sell the parts I need used to lower my cost.

Please feel free to email me or however this is done.

thanks so much in advance
Jim

first of, what is your speed requirement? If wireless can provide that you are fine.

About compatibility - if you other device is capable of IEEE 802.11 standard you can use any client you like, that would be able to associate with your AP.

You can look up installation stories here in the forums. In most cases everything is the same apart from working frequency, and thus, requirements for LOS.

Yes, other end can be any device that works in 802.11 standards, but the device should be made for outdoor installations, ie. laptop will not be able to connect at this distance, no matter what AP you have.

Thank you both for the reply.

At the moment all 3 are on dial up, 56K. So anything wireless will probably be better. I was hoping to get each of them 1 Mbps and work up from there.

The source claims 15Mbps so I suppose in a perfect world each would get 5Mbps.

The radio question is more tricky than 802.11 I think. For instance I see SR9 and XR9 cards that dont appear to link up with anything other than other XR9 cards.

I have no idea what radio the Tranzeo SL9 boxes have inside, so I am a little lost on what radio to put into the RB433 to connect to them.

All of the big names canopy ubit tranzeo seem to have different 900 mhz radios in them and I just dont want to mess up.

Thanks again

Jim

these cards use frequency translator, and in RouterOS they appear as 2GHz cards while actual frequency they output is 900MHz range , so you have to take this into account. You can look up frequency conversion table provided by manufacturer of devices. Then you might have better luck linking them to other 900MHz interfaces.

Thank you again for the kind reply.

I think my next question needs to be …

What Router Boards are good better best for use her house??? I think some people call this the CPE end.

Is my RB433 a good choice for the internet SOURCE end??? I think some people call this the ACCESS POINT end??

thanks again

Jim

you can check some RB411 or similar from series (on routerboard.com), or any router that has at least 1 minicpci slot to plug 900MHz capable card for CPE (client premise equipment)
