Newbee - can't see router on network

Hi,
Using v2.8.23. I’m just starting with this so please be patient.
Have downloaded program and free key to trial the software before purchasing.

Used netinstall to successfully(apparently) install across the network to headless box(no monitor, mouse, keyboard ) I know the box is OK because it works fine as a firewall.

I have given the router 192.168.0.254/24 address on the network, but it cannot be found. Have tried connecting via http, telnet and ssh. Have used network discovery program to find it to no avail - find all other computers but not the Mikrotik box. It is conncected physically to the network as I can see it on the switch.

I’'m obviously stupid and would appecaite any help in finding a solution

thanks

Have you tried to communicate via the serial port?

See http://www.mikrotik.com/docs/ros/2.8/system/serial.content

You can configure the IP address from there. Well, you can configure everything from the serial port.

Thanks Matt,
No I haven’t tried that yet - thanks for the link.
However, I can’t understend why I needed to provide an IP address on installation if it’s not usable. It would be really nice to be able to install and then fully configure over the network, and it would seem logical to me that this is both possible if an IP is set on installation( why else would it be required?), and appropriate in some circumstances eg have an installer stick a box containing router hardware on the top floor of a building, connect it to the network and I can upload and configure the software from the first floor - being lazy enough not to want to go up 15 storeys carrying a laptop.

Maybe I’m asking too much?
