Just got a 411U with a Sierra MC8705 which was preconfigured by our supplier to work with Telstra pre-pay. Having configured the SIM PIN it dials and gets an internet connection with ppp just fine.
I want to use this as a diagnostics access device, so that I can leave it connected on an unattended remote site and connect whenever there are problems on site. Most of the time it will sit idle, until I want to establish a connection.
What is the consensus on the best way to do this? I would prefer to be able to use my own internet connection to VPN to the Routerboard, rather than having to dial directly to it myself. I am hoping to figure out a way to prompt it to connect to the net, perhaps with a prank phone call to the SIM’s number? Disconnecting after 5 minutes of idle time would be fine as once I’m done collecting diagnostics nothing on site would have reason to talk to it. Another option would be to drop the ppp when the VPN disconnects.
I’m guessing this sort of thing could be configured via scripts but since I’m REALLY new to this box I don’t understand the scripting options well enough to make it sing and dance - and I recognise there IS a bit of singing and dancing involved.
Where do I start?
