hi. let me introduce myself 1st. sorry for my bad english writing…
im from malaysia, still a student studying in network computing recently i was googled myself about this software and i found it very interesting. but after few weeks i try to play around with this tool i still cant get the idea on how to use it efficiently. but nevermind i think i need more time to explore this thing. its really fun!
and for the mods, if u dont mind can you provide me with the history about this tool, how and when it was introduced. and most important thing is how this tool works? i mean is it use packet sniffer method or anything else? i already googled it but i dont found anything related to the particular info. currently i`m working on my project and i planned to introduce this tool to my lecturer in my university.
The Dude is a network monitor. You can manually or automatically add devices to monitor. The design is mostly object oriented with a few pieces that are global. It doesn’t capture packets. It does however allow you to capture SNMP data and graph it. Therefore all your devices should have the same SNMP Read community string. Configure the settings in The Dude with that string.
To manually add devices right click on the map and select +add device.
To automatically add devices click on discover and enter the range of ip addresses you would like to monitor.
You can leave auto discover enabled or disable it so nothing else is discovered.
Along with discover is the ability to discover services on devices as they are discovered. These are SNMP Probes that collect various statistics like CPU utilization. You can build your own probes as well. Very cool.
Add sub maps to break the network into sizable chunks. Maybe discover 192.168.1.1 -192.168.1.254 on the top map and the next /24 in a different map.
My top map is all sub maps containing various network segments. I don’t use auto discover and I manually add the services I want on each device.
Once you have added all the devices you want to monitor link them all together with +add link, drag the link from one device to the next and a line will appear. Change the settings to record SNMP traffic for a link and set the type of link to match…
You can now setup SMTP to send email alerts when a service is not working.
hey thanks for the info. really useful. btw from my view of local map, there is a red icons indicating the computers in my network. is it offline or not? and 1 more thing. i only can use ping and netbios for each of the computers under the local map. and i tried to add summore configuration in the discover network but it doesnt work? is that normal or my system got a problem?
thanks.
