Newbie license/operation questions...

I’m currently running Untangle and am getting sick of certain aspects thereof. I’ve been searching for a replacement. While I haven’t setup RouterOS yet. I’m getting ready to…

  1. For home use, what license do I need? I have bi-directional gigabit internet and probably 25 devices at home when you include phones, Alexa, etc. I just don’t want to have any restrictions on what would be considered “normal use”

  2. I have two XBoxes. I want to make sure that I can have them safely setup, have open NAT status, and if playing an online game like Destiny 2, my kid an I can join the same raid party

  3. In regard to the license, is it still married to the HD? So if my nvme drive fails for example, do I have to by another license just because of hardware failure? For the $45 one, I don’t really care. If I need the $250, I do care. Very much.

  4. Do I have to have Windows installed? I have a Protectli FW2B that was running Untangle. Can I install it to that device stand-alone? There’s no way that little box is gonna run a full install Win10

Thanks guys!

I suggest using a CHR version of routeros. It is a vm based install and you can choose the version based on max speed on the interfaces used. There is a 60 day trial license that can be used to verify functionality before spending any money on a license. The CHR licenses can be transferred between VMs, so if you lose a VM due to hardware failure or corruption you won’t lose your license. The CHR licenses can also be purchased through distrbutors and is many times lower than the MSRP.
