One box to rule them all ![]()
Like they say, jack of all trades, master of none…
That CRS418 sure looks nice, but as the guy in the video at the end says:
- make a version with WiFi
- smaller case, 1 PSU is OK, passive cooling at least during normal operation (fans not running unless unit overheats)
That would be the successor to my RB4011. Although 512MB flash still would be preferred over 128MB!
Agree, I’m not sure “CRS” was the right category… To me it looks like it should have been an RB5118…
The lack of Wi-Fi makes sense to me. But given the new “ROSE” features, it’s unfortunate it does not have a couple slots for internal disks like the older RB1100Ahx4 had.
Lack of WiFi makes sense for a +RM device, but maybe we will get a +IN version in the future?
Indeed it would be nice when “for storage” would be implemented as a couple of NVME M.2 slots…
Well, I don’t really care if it is called a “cloud router switch” or a “router board” but as a replacement for my orphaned RB4011 (WiFi-wise) with also some more ports (I now have an additional 8-port switch) this would be perfect. But it has to have WiFi, preferably be silent (no 4 blaring fans) and 2 PSUs is a bit overkill.
This is a spot on comment. This would had made a nice drop-in router, not CRS - switch. But I guess it’s still “dual purpose” RouterOS, SwitchOS?
It would be a waste to run SwitchOS on such a powerful device…
Yes you’re right. I had thought about that after I had posted my reply.
I feel MikroTik missed with this product naming and got it wrong. As @Amm0 stated - this is better suited to be classified as RB5118
A switch with dual PSU is nice, but better suited for router.
Perhaps if we had switch stacking feature and dual power supplies, that would be entirely different. Dual PSU for more enterprise setup or those needing more power reliability. However, on other MikroTik switch offerings, our dual power options are usually POE via management port along with 110v
Yeah, really surprised we’re still seeing only 1G on new products. 2.5G is table stakes these days. Not really sure who / what this product is aimed at. Multi-gig is quickly becoming the new Wi-Fi 6 for Mikrotik… getting left behind by the competition again.
Agreed… I feel they had excess chips to put into production and needed to create a product. Perhaps we can persuade MikroTik to reconsider the purpose of this device and it instead be a router… MUCH better use of the CPU/RAM and the network interfaces. Create a poll and we vote that way, or with our wallet?
RB5118-8P-8G-2S+RM…
I was really excited to see this. however, I cannot get any better performance on 7.19.3 or 7.20b7. The CPU still gets hit too hard on TCP
I’ve tried straight bridged. verified the connections are fasttracked in connections. bridge doesn’t allow hw on wifi interface. I broke that up into interfaces and routed. added fasttrack. switched wpa3/2 and each cipher. turned of ft.
still can’t get TCP over about 635Mbps even on 160Mhz (160 or 80/80). I get the same speeds on 80Mhz with same CPU and ~415Mbps on 40Mhz.
L22-ax to L22-ax
profiler shows wifi chewing up CPU.
also worth noting that there are no entries in routerous changelogs for 7.19.3 or 7.19.4 or <=7.20b7
I see no improvements here at all for mikrotik to mikrotik connections.
switching to an iphone 16 pro which can do over a gig to other wifi6, same speeds download or upload from the l22-ax in 80 or 160. CPU bound on the l22.
not related to what is included in the news letter but more about it, why two click to get to the pdf when it was one before? ![]()
ok, now time to read the pdf ![]()
That was poorly worded. The update mainly fixes disconnection issues and stability, not performance as “speed”.
It’s still one click for me. Where is the second click?
People say many things, luckily people who actually create new stuff do not pay much attention otherwise mobile phones would never get cameras and we would still be carrying PDAs for email, laptops for gaming and movies etc. instead of one single device…
I’m really curious about the wifi7 mediatek drivers. historically qualcomm has had much faster radios but a LOT of vendors have had real duds for wifi6 recently. issues with the qualcomm drivers or zero documentation in the SDK for a feature etc. mediateks haven’t been as fast, but the company appears to be radically better to work with.
I’m very very much waiting on a wifi7 and 6Ghz mikrotik kit and I kind hope it’s not qualcomm… and these drivers seem to suggest just that.
