[nfo] What's Sicurity Wireless impact on perfomances?

Security wireless type (WEP, WPA, WPA2..) can impact perfomaces (troughput) of a PtP link (about TCP 30 Mbits on RB433AH)?

Or wireless security computation is very limited?

I think this article does an ok job at simply summing up how encryption impacts performance (5-30% if you don’t want to click):

Note there is a comment by Philip that says:
“Encrypting data adds some processor load as well. However, not securing your wireless network can mean your neighbors tapping into your network, it is like leaving your front door open.”

For a super convoluted answer you can go here:

Actually Lawrence is wrong, encryption is done in the wireless card’s hardware, and it will not affect throughput at all.

Yes, Normis you are right about encryption on the hardware level. But I think what magnavox was referring to in terms of performance impact is when you click on a link, there are very small delays (referring more to the total transmission time of what you visually see versus the actual data being transmitted cause only takes a few clock cycles to decompress a byte) before you actually get the information back on your computer.

So yes, throughput…you shouldn’t have any problems.

AFAIK latencies elsewhere have larger impact when compared to decryption speed. that 1 - 2 ms latency on the link is even bigger than decryption speed.
