No L3HW when using IPv6 next hop for IPv4 router enhe

Hi everyone,

I am experiencing an issue where L3 Hardware Offloading (L3HW) stops working and traffic falls back to the CPU when using BGP Extended Next Hop Encoding (ENHE).

Is this a known limitation or a bug in RouterOS?

according to MT support, the hardware does not support this, at least on CRS3xx devices that i asked about.

We’re running CRS510, I hope the ASIC supports it, because it’s such a good thing for enabling cheap implementation of IPv6-only core networks without usage of complex networking.

i would assume not, since according to the L3HW support table, the CRS510 has the same feature set (with different TCAM limits) as e.g. the CRS312 which support confirms doesn't support this in hardware.

but it wouldn't hurt to open a support request if you want to be sure. i find it rather surprising that anyone is selling a switch chip in 2026 that can't do this, but...
