no PTP for CRS320-8P-8B-4S+RM

Hi,

CRS320-8P-8B-4S+RM

It is strange to not have support of PTP on this new device…

:frowning:

even 7.16b4…

In my opinion, PTP (as in IEEE 1588) is a carrier-grade protocol. And in my opinion CRS320 is not meant as carrier-grade device. So I wonder what’s your use case for CRS320 which asks for (explicit) PTP support?

BTW, ROS version doesn’t matter, IEEE 1588 requires support in hardware and I don’t know if 98DX226S SoC actually supports IEEE 1588?

I’m using it with several model even crs318.
We are using it with Dante and lm acoustic…

It’s used in any area where distributed precision time matters. In addition to A/V cases exemplified by the OP’s Dante use case, there are things like LXI that depend on it for accurate timing of measurements. The desktop-cased subset of the CRS3xx line is a fine match to EE workbenches full of Keysight gear, and the rack units a good match for the automated test-and-measurement setups often found in electronics manufacturing.

My (admittedly little) experience is that PtP works pretty fine even if intermediate switches don’t support IEEE1588 … as long as links and switches aren’t pushed to the limits. Sure tge precission will be slightly worse but with capacity (both on links and switch processing) to spare the precission degradation is not too bad for many uses (precisdion drops from nanoseconds towards microseconds). Things go to much worse if any of involved links gets congested, the delay jitter then goes through the ceiling and support for IEEE1588 makes such setup still useful.

Now, if one would like to use device (e.g. CRS320) as grand-master, then proper support for IEEE1588 is mandatory.

Mikrotik just replied to my ticket:

Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to MikroTik Support.

PTP support for the CRS320-8P-8B-4S+ will be included in our upcoming RouterOS version 7.17. In the meantime, you can use this pre-release test version:

It seems to be working so feel free to use the same link. :sunglasses:
