Old RB951G-2HnD: winbox unable to connect

I’m trying to connect to an old RB951G-2HnD that was never used and it seems to reject me.

notes:

  • did reset on router
  • running latest winbox on WINE
  • set winbox to “Legacy Mode”
  • no idea which version of ROS this thing is running
  • stickers on the router do not indicate any password, just model #, MAC #, serial #, etc.

You do not know the version and is writed 5.26 on winbox???

Use netinstall and update the routerboard to 6.48.6

If this REALLY is a never used router, plug into any port other than #1 and your computer should get an address in 192.168.88.0/24 and the router should be 192.168.88.1. If that does not work, reset the router to factory and try again. If that does not work, try a netinstall as Rextended suggested. Try the easy stuff first - Netinstall can be picky…

picky like latest winbox on old 5.x that do not have support at all for non secured user storage…

Oh you're right, I didn't see it there. I read that netinstall is kinda iffy with WINE so I just looked for an old version of winbox.
I did finally find a 2.x version of winbox which could connect without issue.
Not to worry, I upgraded to routerOS 6.48
