OpenVPN Maximum Speed

Hi guys,

I’ve successfully configured OpenVPN server in ethernet mode over TCP, bridged with my LAN with SHA1 and AES-256 encryption on my new MikroTik hAP ac^3 RBD53iG-5HacD2Hnd.

My Mikrotik router is connected to internet via 300 Mbit/s download and 100 Mbit/s upload link.

I’m testing my VPN on a remote location with 1 Gbit/s download and 300 Mbit/s upload link.

The result is 30 Mbit/s download and 27 Mbit/s upload speed over the OpenVPN tunnel.

Same test performed via L2TP/Ipsec tunnel with SHA1 and AES-256 CBC encryption gives me 100 Mbit/s download and upload speed.

My question is: Is this the maximum hardware performance of MikroTik hAP ac^3 RBD53iG-5HacD2Hnd with OpenVPN or shall I look for configuration problems?

I’m using RouterOS v.6.47.8

Kind Regards,
Nikolay

Only ipsec hardware accelerated, not openvpn. Avoid using openvpn.

Hi mikruser,

Thank you for your reply.

I’m aware that Ipsec is hardware accelerated.
Avoiding OpenVPN is not an option for me.
However I would like to know if that’s the maximum my hardware can do or not.

Kind Regards,
Nikolay
