Optimal setup for backhaul with one AP and three stations ??

Hi,

we have a setup like this. Everything is Mikrotik, and the wireless part is MT’s RB/B4O package running in 5.5 GHz turbo mode. The wireless links are between 3 and 8 km.

Station1

AP-bridge — router — users (subnet1/16)
||
||==Station2 — router — users (subnet2/16)
||
||==Station3 — router — users (subnet3/16)

Wlan equipment runs in subnet0/24. The AP is routing.

Presently, the wireless equipment is setup as a standard AP/client structure. We don’t use bridging. Everything works as you would expect. Real world performance is approx. 20 mbps for one hop and 10 mbps for two hops.

My question is simple: Can we gain performance by using a different configuration ??? Bridge, wds, other ??? And please give a hint about how to set it up !

I have asked MT-support the same question, but no reply :frowning: Hopefully better luck here !

To Mikrotik: Why don’t you enclose a short “How to get started” folder with a USD 1600,- package ???

Hi KimC,
We’re trying to setup 1 AP-Bridge and 3 Stations as you have with no luck in it.

Station -1 is 4.3km from the AP
Station -2 is 5.2km from the AP
Station -3 is 2.7km from the AP

We’re using:
-Pacwireless 5.725-5.850GHz 26dBi Grid Dish
-Atheros 802.11a/b/g Dualband mPCI cards in 5.805 frec.

We did check the pigtails and they’re ok (they’re connected to G ports and appropriate antenna)
We can’t get connection to any Station.
Before the installation of the Stations in site, we did get connection near with the AP (about 50ft away)

May we have a copy of your AP and Station configuration?

Thanks in advance!

Here is a quote from wisp-router’s website

A1 = Primary 802.11a/5GHz antenna port
A2 = Diversity 802.11a/5GHz antenna port
G1 = Primary 802.11b/g/2.4GHz antenna port
G2 = Diversity 802.11b/g/2.4GHz antenna port

You should have the pigtail plugged into one of the “a” ports if you are using 5.805 Ghz

Hi AsDsL

Have you solved your problem yet ?
I am facing the same situation: I bought the standard MT 5GHz wireless package: 1 ap (Atheros + 10dB omni) and 2 client ( Atheros + 30 dB grid)
I have benchmarked it at 5,55GHz 10ft : no problem.
I tried anither test at 1 mile : absolutely no signal from the AP !!!
I contacted MT support (they react like their AP :? )
I can receive SSID from other operators from the client - the same happens when I put the Ap in scan mode.
Is it possible that the atheros is not transmitting at all ?

Hi sacketty,
I didn’t solve my problem yet. I’m still waiting for a solution.

Hi dwright,
Pigtail is connected to port A1 and antenna is set to A in software.

I did try with 2.4 and pigtail is working, (pigtail connected to G1 in board and antenna set to A in software)

I think it is an antenna problem, but I had replaced 4 5.8 antennas and same problem.

dwright can you email me?

Thanks in advance!
Tony

sure, what’s your email address?
