Other uses for routerboard??

Just wondering if it’s possibe to use RouterBOARD 200 to install windows 2000 on?

I know you would wonder why the hell would I want to do that! I have a business wireless customer who is paying £1500 for till systems that are just PC’s custom made to be small running windows 2000 with a crappy till software and a touch screen?

with a RouterBOARD 200 I could setup simmilar system much cheaper. The specs look OK for the purpose exept the size of the flash which I immagine could be replaced for suitable size?

Can anybody comment?

I would not think so…

I would look more into a small form factor Intel (My choice) or VIA board,
(If you REALY need small, check out the NANOITX from VIA (Dont know about Avail yet…)

If you want to convert them over to another OS that wasnt such a resource PIG and runs so many “grabage” processes. then it would work…

Just my two cents…

Yeah thanks for the thoughts. they are only currently 233mhz machines? It would be so much more sensible for the manufactorer of the till software to use Linux and make an OS instead of windows software.

We take it for granted in the networking world but these companies are in a different world still using primative OS like windows 2000 and waisting resourses and giving instabillity? But there you go..

Thanks again.

Besides the fact that 266 mhz on a low powered x86 cpu doesnt perform anywhere near a desktop 266 mhz cpu and missing interesting extensions would make a desktop OS seem like a snail sliding through tar even for the most patient person. You would have to have it run with about 500 or more megs of ram.
I dont know the internals of the routerboard bios but there are no guarantees that it’ll let it boot. Without keyboard, mouse, monitor what would you use it for?

Assuming it boots I guess with a cutdown severely cut down windows you could get it to run ,… somewhat. How about a Embedded Windows version??

However, why not try and let us know?

I have installed MS2000, XP & XP Media successfully on a $100 thin client.

you get all the USB VGA ports to which is nice.
