Overall Usage Mbps

Hi,
I have a small network that I admin
I have had a few customers (there are only 18 active users via PPPoE) that have complained that speed slow down on the evenings?
I cant understand why this should be as there is 300Mbps of Fiber bandwidth going in and only 18x 8Mbps packages even if all pull their max.
As far as I can tell the Wifi links are all capable of more than 200Mbps each (using btest between devices)

The question Im asking is what is the best way to monitor the max usage so I can look back and see what the network pulled max in the evenings.
Most of the monitoring solutions I have looked at seem more concerned with monitoring and capturing Data usage which I dont really care about as Data is unlimited on my fiber.
The best solution i have so far is the Dude monitoring between the CC router and Netmetal and polling every 1 sec?
Thanks
M

Have You thought about MRTG with SNMP?

Or use dude.

Hi Guys,

thanks for the suggestions, the MRTG with SNMP looks far too complicated for what im trying to do.

I use ISPADMIN for all my config/billing/management needs but I have never managed to get the SNMP bit working accurately? I can be watching physically in my master router that the network is pulling 20Mbps for instance but the graphs in ISPADMIN never show more than 5Mbps used ?? and its has not been an issue until now as no speed issues.

For now I just want a quick dirty way of monitoring traffic between 2 bits of equipment to assist in tracking down the bottle neck.
I ended up just installing the Dude connect VPN and add the 2 bits of equipment by ip address and then set the link between the two to monitor (poll) ever sec I now have a lovely historical graph showing peak usage thats seems fairly accurate.

For those interested I believe the bottle neck to actually by the limitations of the RB750 which in this small network is what I referred to as my master router.
I believe because it is in router mode using Queue trees, PPoE, and IP NAT and Mangle rules which with 18x clients makes approx 50 rules, from the RB750GL (http://routerboard.com/RB750GL) Spec sheet maybe limited to between 47.5Mbps & 88.5 Mbps anyway.
Thanks
M

I know nothing about graphs in ispadmin, but try the dude as I suggested.
Anyway, the RB750 is not the right main router for isp services, but if 20Mbits is your uplink limit, than it may be sufficient. You need to see cpu utilization in system-profile to know if there are any bottlenecks in cpu.
