Went to log in this morning and username and password not working. It is still passing traffic and the VPN L2tp still connects fine. Is there anyway to recover password using the VPN password? any default passwords I can try?
The router is a 3 hour drive away so trying to see if there are any remote fixes first. Or do I just have to do a hard reset?
There is no way to recover the password.
You will need to hard-reset the router and load your latest backup.
And then look at the firewall. It is not good practice to allow login to the admin interface (telnet, ssh, http, winbox, api) from the entire internet.
Either allow a small number of fixed IP addresses or admin the router via a VPN.
