i have some pci xpress 64bit network cards running
REALY fine on Mt
based on intel and broadcom
Can you tell me which Intel 82XXX number these PCI-E cards in MT are? The system → resources → PCI window show should these values. I am waiting to buy 2 supermicros that have PCI-E nics but am holding off because I don’t think they are supported yet.

i don’t think the bus a card uses matters…
if it’s pci or pci-x if the driver is in the driver list it will work…
even if int’s not in the driver list (intel) it will work because alle intel cards use the same driver but… there is a possibility that you have to change the MTU of the card to do vlans… as i had to do once, when a card wasn’t fully supported yet…
So it was a PCI-X intel card, which is working under the unified driver because they have been around for a long time.
The Intel unified driver was specficially updated to include the new PCI-E line of chips. The intel driver in MT has not been updated that I know of - therefore any new PCI-E intel nics that are built into these motherboards will not work with MT. I’ll quit barking and just buy PCI-X, although I hate wasting money on inferior technology.

are 100% pci express 64 bit

it’s not the bus that makes your driver…
you bus is suported by your bus drivers of your motherboard…
not the driver of your nic…
your nic driver depends on the chip on the card…
if you have a supported chip on your nic…
and it’s a pci express or a old pci card
both will work.. of your motherboard bus is supported…
and i have yet to see a Motherboards bus that wasn’t supported by MT
what i did see… was that some unsupported intel nic chips do work…
but large MTU (used for Vlan’s and stuff) don’t work…
just lower your MTU and they do work…
i asked MT a few times already to update there intel driver…
haven’t seen any change yet…
just check the chip on the Supermicro boards.. if it’s on the supported Chip list of MT it will work…
no matter what bus it uses…
ps i used a lot of supermicros already with MT
haven’t found a board that was’t fully supported…
except sata raid based on the intel ich5 -6 chipset…
just use normal sata for that…
Correct, in this case the Intel PCI-E nics use chips that are not on the MT list (82573 and other PCI-e versions). They specifically said the ‘older’ unified driver does not cover the new pci-e based chips, ie 82573. A ‘new’ unified driver has been released to include these new chips. So, you are right, the bus doesn’t matter, but in this case it does because the old driver doesn’t support the new chips (which just happen to be the pci-e ones) like we’re used to.
I bet in a month or so there will be at least 10 new posts and support requests asking for new intel driver updates. I’ve already seen 2 in the past week besides me.

But,
linux drivers for many nics are complex. With one driver alot of chipsets, soo there is chance of working PCI express card (I think especcialy intel chipset).
Well before I spend $4000 on new supermicros that have PCI-E intel nics I’d like to find someone else that’s using them successfully… So far I have not heard of a single person using PCI-E intel nics with MT. Anyone anyone ? If so, post the chip number that MT is showing under System - > Resources - > PCI.

The 82546EB is a PCI-X 64bit intel chip, not PCI-E.

running a system with 2 broadcom pci express 64 bit gig nics
4 intel pci xpress 64 bit gig nics on a 2.9.8 MT system
based on a custom motherboard with PCI xpress slots.
there is no problem at all.. as long as you use supported intel or broadcom chips…
the NIC has to be supported… both manufacterus make the same cards based on old pci and new pci xpress
it’s the chipset that has to be supported the way it’s connected doesn’t matter…
and again…
i also run a lot of MT systems based on supermicro servers…
and yes the 2 broadcom nics do work

Look under features and benefits. It’s a PCI-X chip, not PCI-E.
I am not interested in Broadcom chips, only intel ones. The servers we are looking at do not have broadcom, they are intel.

82546 is listed as a supported driver by MT, 82573 is not. 82573 is a PCI-E based intel nic.

pci-x = pci-e = pci express (new stuff)
PCI and PCI-X are ‘older’ technology … very common.
PCI-E is totally different technology. It is 2-8x faster than PCI-X. PCI-E can either be 1x or 16x. PCI-X and PCI-E are both 64bit however. PCI is 32 bit.
“While in theory PCI Express x16 can offer clearly more performance than PCI-X 533 - 8 GB/s compared to 4.26 GB/s” PCI-X 533, I never heard of that, typically its 133mhz for pci-x. I think a PCI-E is about 8x faster than pci-x 133. So, basically you could run 4 gigabit cards on pci-e and be okay, whereas 1 gigabit on pci-x fills the bus pretty much.

The PCI-X 133mhz bus is wwwwaaaayyyy slower than PCI-E 16x.
we updated the current intel drivers, and added support for a whole bunch of other cards too. this will be in 2.9.21
