We recently installed a new router in our VoIP environment. It’s the CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, and was sold to use as being able to handle “many millions of packets” - our experience was not so.
Remember specifically this for almost pure VoIP. We found that firstly Mikrotik have no clue what so ever about SIP, since their firewall>service has SIP port 5060 listed there… and a option for “direct media”… now let me spell this out to you because you seem confused about this YOU ONLY NEED TO HANDLE THE VIA MESSAGE WHEN YOU NAT!!! I’m not sure how much more simple this can be, leave the packets alone if you are not natting.
So that was fail one, we had to disable “direct media” (SIP ALG whatever) as almost all calls where being dropped, … but it gets worse… it wasn’t good enough to just disable direct media (this only stopped the calls from being dropped but not the poor performance), we had to disable the entire SIP service line. As soon as we did that - we where able to setup calls at a reasonable rate… well that was until this morning, where call setups where again slowed down and phones de-resisted… whats wrong with this CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+, its supposed to handle much more than this, but its completely pathetic… its does not seem suitable for a high volume VoIP environment.
So, question… what is?? I need a highest performing VoIP router, please can someone who has tested the device on the field let me know. Our volume is about 300 call-setups a second, but will need room to grow.
