Poor RouterBoard Quality (last year or so)

Hello,

I work in large company where we do (try :wink: ) to monitor hardware. We use MikroTik RouterBoards for internal low cost solutions. It appears that MikroTik have some (serious?) quality problems:

  • last year we’ve ordered 80+ RB and about 10% was returned immediately as broken,
  • during last two years we had about ~60 actions against ~90 installations composed of RB, with about 140 RB all,
  • from these, about 40% was damaged RB, the rest was power failures and other failures.

It appears that most of the time its RB450 and 450G which dies (90% of all deaths). On the other hand, we do have only single RB800 located in some extreme location and its still good after 4 years.

What You users thinks about it? does MikroTik know about the quality? We are just about to order ~120 411UAHR and I’m somewhat afraid about the issues. Especially, because we’ve already ordered 4pcs of 411UAHR and one of them was already broken - so its 25%…

we installed about 60-80 RB7xx and I only know of one device that failed (loose contact at the RJ45 Port).
We also installed some RB493 and RB450 and all of them are running trouble-free.

The only troubles we had were software related.

I heard that some people had problems with the PSUs. Since we don’t use the supplied PSUs, I can not say much about the quality of these parts. Did you check different PSUs with the RBs that didn’t work?

yes,
power failures include power supply failures but still i didn’t include those in the report. true, we have stopped using extremely chip poe devices and starting to use central power supply for two RB as well as for some other devices we need at site. unfortunately for now i can’t precisely enumerate the numbers, but we had at least a dozen of ps failures or so.

There were dodgy on the capacitors on the 450s a while back, this might of been the cause of the reliability issues you had?

Maybe! unfortunately I’m not able to check it as we’ve always swapped to new ones. But I’ll talk with the guys who did replace the stuff.

Anyway, now I’m more interested in quality of 411UAHR as we are to invest into them a little.

We have deployed about 5 without any issues.

New rb711-5Hn (with metal ethernet) works well 2 months. Now no LED light, … death :frowning:
Power source is OK

No, that’s separate issue which I was kindly asked to check by SwissWISP and I did :slight_smile:

40% of failures on about 60 interventions means 24 times Routerboard failed somehow. During 2 years period its one monthly which is still a lot of. It also mean that around 17% of our all Routerboard base failed which is scary. Adding 10% of our last year order the number only increases. Truly scary, that’s why I ask.

Meanwhile, I talk with human instead of systems’ statistics. It appears, that not all RB failures were critical - they sometimes needed just manual reboot, sometimes a port died and guys moved to another spare, one or two default configurations because of who knows what etc. System statistics usually include just “RouterBoard Failure”. It appears that we really need to try to focus more on proper reporting :-/
