I agree 100% that some form of guidance would be very helpful to all participants.
I am in favor of an automated response to all initial posts that includes a link to a (short, concise, easy to comply with) "Posting FAQ" thread.
The Posting FAQ thread would include, for example:
"We enjoy helping others, but you need to participate in a way that makes it possible. So please do the following now:

Think through very clearly what your problem is, what is not working, what you want to achieve, and how you state it. Then re-read it and ask youself "have I included enough information, in a way that can be readily undersood, so that someone completely unfamiliar with my environment and configuration can understand what I need?
